Dr. Sand was born in Minnesota, but came to Los Angeles as a child. His first California home was in Playa Del Rey, just a few blocks up the hill from the office.

He graduated from UCLA, eventually became a clinical psychologist before returning to dental school at UC San Francisco where he graduated in 1982.
